What the researchers found
The team assembled parental-care records for harvestmen in the superfamily Gonyleptoidea and expanded the dataset dramatically by systematically searching iNaturalist observations. The added records more than doubled the number of species for which parental behaviour could be scored.
When those observations were mapped onto an evolutionary tree, maternal and paternal care did not follow identical routes. In the analysis, maternal care arose from ancestors without care, while paternal care could arise either from no care or from lineages in which maternal care was already present.
Why that is interesting
Parental care is often discussed using birds and mammals, but arachnids offer very different ways to examine the same evolutionary problem. Harvestmen include species in which females guard eggs, species in which males do it, and species with no parental guarding at all.
The study is also a strong example of citizen science being used for more than distribution maps. A photograph uploaded by a member of the public can preserve a behavioural observation that later becomes useful in a large comparative analysis.
Why it matters
This broadens the picture of arachnid behaviour and shows that seemingly simple natural-history observations can become valuable scientific data when they are documented well.
For Introvertebrates, it is an especially nice reminder that careful observation matters. Behaviour that looks like a small moment in one photograph can contribute to a much larger evolutionary story.
