This study tested how much useful taxonomic information can actually be pulled from morphology in a very look-alike tarantula lineage. The authors compared Lasiocyano sazimai with several species of Lasiodora using what they describe as the most extensive morphometric framework yet applied within Theraphosidae.
Their approach combined linear measurements, geometric morphometrics, multivariate statistics, discriminant analyses, cross-validation, and outline-based analyses of structures such as the sternum and male palpal bulb. Some analyses did recover statistically significant differences, but the overall result was not clean separation. Broad overlap, high intraspecific variation, and overfitting repeatedly weakened the diagnostic value of the methods.
In practical terms, the study found that morphology alone did not provide reliable separation between Lasiocyano sazimai and the Lasiodora species included in the analysis.
What makes that interesting
The paper is especially useful because it does not just assume morphology should work if enough measurements are taken. Instead, it explicitly tests where morphology stops being enough. That is important in tarantulas, where closely related species and genera can be frustratingly similar in body form.
The authors also show that some characters that may look promising at first become much less convincing when sample size increases and cross-validation is applied. In other words, what seems diagnostic in a small comparison can fall apart when more real variation is included.
One of the clearest takeaways is that only a very small number of characters remained consistently useful at the generic level, especially the stridulatory setae in Lasiodora and the distinctive blue-purplish setae of Lasiocyano.
Why it matters
This matters because it sharpens how people think about spider taxonomy. A genus can be valid and biologically meaningful without being easy to separate using body form alone, especially in groups with strong morphological conservatism.
It also supports a broader lesson that applies well beyond this one lineage: integrative taxonomy is not academic overkill. In some spider groups, it is the only realistic way to avoid forcing neat names onto blurry morphological boundaries.
For tarantula research more broadly, the study is a useful reminder that morphology is still important, but it has limits. Molecular data, ecology, biogeography, and other lines of evidence may be necessary to get a more reliable picture of diversity and relationships.
