What was found
The “spidernauts” experiment sent two jumping spiders to the International Space Station to see how they would move and hunt in microgravity. According to the account, one of the spiders, Nefertiti, was able to adapt quickly enough to hunt fruit flies successfully despite the radically unfamiliar environment.
That made the story memorable for obvious reasons, but it also made it useful: it showed that a visually guided predator could remain functional even when one of the most basic physical conditions of life on Earth had changed.
What makes that interesting
Jumping spiders rely on precise movement and strong visual coordination, so space is not just a funny backdrop for them. It is a meaningful test of how flexible their hunting behaviour can be when the normal rules of movement no longer apply.
The experiment also gained attention because Nefertiti set a record for time spent in space by a spider and reportedly survived the return to Earth as well.
Why it matters
This matters because it gives a striking example of how adaptable spider behaviour can be. Even when the environment becomes almost absurdly unfamiliar, some core behaviours can still be reorganized well enough to function.
It also helps push back against the assumption that spiders are rigid little machines. Experiments like this make their behavioural flexibility much harder to dismiss.
