Rather than focusing only on where the spiders occur, the research looked at how they physically respond to human-dominated surroundings.
That distinction matters. A species being present in a place does not automatically mean that the conditions are neutral or easy for it to tolerate.
What makes that interesting
Joro spiders are often discussed in broad, simplified terms: they are invasive, they spread well, they seem adaptable, therefore they must be doing fine. But adaptability and lack of physiological cost are not the same thing.
The finding is interesting because it adds nuance. A spider may succeed in occupying noisy, developed spaces and still experience those spaces as stressful.
Why it matters
This matters not only for Joro spiders, but for how people think about invertebrates in general. Human environments shape animal lives in more ways than simple presence-or-absence maps can show.
It also raises a broader ecological question: if visible spiders can show measurable stress responses to traffic-heavy habitats, similar effects may be happening in many smaller or less noticed invertebrates as well.
